Our next production will be:

The Lady Killers by Graham Linehan

Directed by Maggie Smith

The Pitmen Painters by Lee Hall

The Pitmen Painters is a play set in 1930s and tells the true story of a group of miners from Ashington in Northumberland, whose lives were changed when they hired someone from Newcastle University to teach an Art Appreciation evening class. Unable to understand each other, they embarked on one of the most unusual experiments in British art, as the pitmen learned to become painters. Within a few years they became acquainted with some of the most avant-garde artists of the day. Their work was taken for prestigious collections and they were celebrated throughout the British art world; but every day they continued to work as miners. Their paintings can be seen today at Woodhorn Museum in Ashington

The play is an affectionate depiction of events, told with warmth and humour through the interplay of the characters. It premiered at Live Theatre, Newcastle upon Tyne, September 2007, before transferring to the National Theatre in 2008

Other plays by Lee Hall include “Billy Elliot”, “Spoonface Steinberg” and “Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour”. His screenplay credits include “War Horse” and “Victoria and Abdul”

Performance dates: 10th, 11th and 12th May 2018

Rehearsals begin in February
